At the end of October, LGE was notified that the expedited lead pipe replacement effort underway in Benton Harbor is almost complete.
Reports are that almost all of the impacted pipes in the city have been replaced or confirmed not to have lead contamination. Approximately 4,500 pipes have been addressed and under fifty more replacements or inspections remain.
For three straight years, tests from Benton Harbor’s water system revealed lead levels in the tap water that exceeded safety. In September of 2021, activists and supporters filed a petition for emergency action with the EPA prompting Governor Gretchen Whitmer to take action.
Earlier this year, LGE was on the ground in the majority Black city of just under 10,000 residents, helping direct federal resources to city and community leaders.
